First… on the new platform.

October 21st, 2011 by admin

First post on the new…  First of all, I guess I should explain why things look different.  It’s a little hard to explain, but I’ll do my best.  A few months ago, my hosting provider, ASPnix, notified me that they had a new control panel system that would greatly improve the user experience for hosting clients like myself.  At that time, I hadn’t logged on to the control panel for about a year so I wasn’t overly excited about an upgrade that didn’t really impact me.  Well, fast forward a few months: they tell me that I need to have my sites moved over to the new control panel ASAP because the old servers will be turned off on Nov 1st.  Yipes, time to sit up and take notice!

So I made a backup of all the files and databases for my handful of domains and then entered a ticket to make the move to the new control panel.  What they didn’t tell me is that they would be moving my hosting environment from IIS 6, SQL 2005 to IIS 7.5 and SQL 2008.  At face value, that doesn’t look like a huge job, but my sites are .net Nuke portals from wayyyy back in the day.  We’re talking framework v2.0.  Maybe even 1.1, I don’t even know at this point.  I don’t even think I have a complete set of the source code for all that stuff, so it was going to be a very large chore to get the old site working on these new platforms.  That’s not to say that I won’t take the task on someday, but for now I’ve settled on putting a WordPress blog together.  They’re not really lying when they say it takes 5 minutes to set up.  What a pleasure!

I’ll try to get some of the old content uploaded into this new WordPress, and I might even post some fresh stories every once in a while.  Stay tuned!
